VBAC Feature in Straits Times

Today, Strait Times features an article about VBAC in the Mind Your Body section. It is pretty informative, highlighting the common view of most gynaes in Singapore and shares some current findings on the safety of VBACs.

  1. Yes, I read about the article in MYB and I found enlightment in the article!

I am going to be a 2nd time mother this mid August and all along I wanted to give birth naturally because this is how Mother Nature build us for. However I delivered my 1st child after a failed attempt of natural birth via c-sect due to the following reasons
    1) was overdue for 5 days
    2) Induced birth for 14 hours but celvix only open for 3cm
    3) My child’s heart beat was weakening.
So my obstetrician decided to perform emergency c-sect on me and I wasn’t prepared mentally. I was scared but eventually I pulled thru.

Now being blessed with a 2nd child, I know I want to try Vbac. Thanks for sharing your storye. Now I am sure I can do it… hopefully my child will be in the correct position too (oh yes, by the way, if the bb is in a breech position, can VBAC be performed too?).

  2. I don't think so. Do check with your doctor. Do email me to chat more, cos I don't have your email. You're due August...lots of time to prepare for a VBAC!

  4. Hi There,

I just delivered my firstborn last Sunday by c-section. It was a turbulent pregnancy as my gynae and I swung back and forth between natural and c-section birth. I must make it clear that I wanted a natural birth from the onset. However, a low-lying placenta discovered at 5th month meant that a c-section would have to be considered if the placenta did not move up by 8th month or so. By 9th month, however, it had moved up out of the way (by this time, I had convinced myself that c-section wouldn't be so scary) so it looked highly likely a natural birth would be welcomed.

As baby did not appear by my due date (last Saturday), my gynae wanted to induce ASAP as she had concerns over an aging placenta. Baby's size was good, head was down but not fully engaged. No signs of labour by this stage.

On 6th Feb 0000 hr,I started the induction process. At this stage,I felt confident that a natural delivery was only hours away. Alas, after 16 hours of 2 cycles of failed induction, I was only 1 cm dilated, tired and highly anxious. My waters could not be broken due to the unripe cervix. At 4.15 pm, my gynae decided on an emergency c-section and baby Lucas was born at 4.59 pm. As Denise mentioned in her comment above, I was also mentally unprepared and very scared, but it happened very quickly and I am now blessed with a lovely son.

After reading the MYB article on VBAC, I am very interested in trying this, if I am fortunate enough to conceive a 2nd time. I've been told over and over again - and witnessed many friends and relatives - who have had c-section after c-section once their firstborn is delivered by c-section. Your experience and the experiences shared by the other moms here has gien me renewed confidence, as well as rich resources to consult, when the time comes for me to consider a VBAC :) Thank you for enlightening me!

  5. Congrats for the birth of grapefruit! Very cute. Not all gynaes push for delivery the minute you are past EDD. If your body and your baby are not ready for birth, will induction make both ready to spring into action? hmmm...
Hope you can someday get the birth you want, meanwhile enjoy your grapefruit!
